If your hamstrings are too tight to allow you to reach the bolster comfortably, temporarily dismantle your bolster ramp: Set the bolster up like a vertical column (or leaning tower), and rest your forehead against the top of it as you fold forward just a few degrees. We all know the feeling of an amazing yoga class - the kind where you realize yoga isn’t just transforming your body, it’s transforming your life. If your hands make for a bony pillow, or your forehead doesn’t reach them easily, rest your forehead instead on a folded blanket. If your heels are uncomfortable, pad them with blankets as well. Want more props? To make the forward fold more accessible, you could sit up on a blanket (or two), and fold with bent knees (placing a rolled-up blanket or block under each knee for support). If your head is turned to one side, halfway through the pose turn it to the other side. Stack your hands to create a pillow for your forehead or rest your forearms and hands on the floor and turn your head to one side. Fold forward, bringing your chest to the bolster. Sit upright, facing and straddling the bolster, with your legs fairly straight and about 90 degrees apart. A folded blanket behind the knees (smooth edge against the knee crease), draped over your calves and heels, can prevent the knees from flexing as deeply and create a softer seat. Want more props? If the floor is hard, or your knees are sensitive, you might appreciate a blanket under your knees. If your bolster is thin and soft, like the one shown here, you may want to add a folded blanket on top for additional support in some or all of the poses below. Inclined Bolster Version 1: If your bolster is firm, simply place a block on its flattest setting horizontally across the back of your mat, and tip one of the short ends of your bolster up on it (so that the highest point of the inclined bolster is at the back of the mat). Try any of the three options below, depending on which props are available. Keep in mind that there’s more than one way to incline your bolster. Or 2 blocks and 2 blankets folded into long rectanglesįor all of the poses below, you’ll need an inclined bolster slanting up toward the back of your mat.You can do it as an entire sequence, or simply draw from it as you’d like. The following restorative yoga practice aims to minimize construction time and maximize relaxation time. I also feel that many students appreciate easy transitions that don’t interrupt their bliss too much even more than they might appreciate additional prop support. I admit that a pared-down prop arrangement may not be as relaxing as a more bounteous one (and I do suggest additional prop options below for those with the time, energy, and props to spare), but I’ve come to believe that the support of one firm bolster is enough to allow many of us to let go after a long day. I’ve come to believe that the support of one firm bolster is enough to allow many of us to let go after a long day. (In this restorative practice, for example, we make use of the same prop setup for a few poses.) It’s especially helpful when teaching students who are newer to restorative yoga, when teaching large groups, and when teaching or practicing somewhere that might not have a vast storehouse of yoga props (like a gym or your own home, for example).Įven when I’m teaching small groups of students familiar with restorative yoga at studios with ample props, I find that being able to use the same setup for two or three poses helps the flow of class. When I finally began teaching restorative classes, the solution I gradually arrived at was to create an extremely simple setup-the one I’m sharing here-and to use that setup for all the poses in a sequence. Still, when I became a yoga teacher, I shrank from teaching restorative yoga, daunted by the prospect of talking groups of people into building the poses I’d come to love. I tried a few restorative classes, but I was put off by the elaborate setups for each pose, which I felt stole minutes from my “naps” and taxed my mind with the (for me!) terrible task of spatial reasoning (I thank all the yoga teachers over the years who patiently untangled me from straps).Įach new setup created anxiety in me: Will I be the only one who builds this next pose all wrong?Īs I slowly became familiar with the architecture of the most frequently taught restorative poses, I got over my grumpiness and learned to love practicing restorative yoga with as many props as possible. I admit that early on in my yoga life, I wasn’t much of a restorative yogi.

Very basically what they did was use a specially tuned array of lasers to bombard the atoms with photons from all angles. The science of slowing down atoms with lasers was pioneered by Bill Phillips and his colleagues, a feat for which they shared the 1997 Nobel Prize in Physics. But how do you slow down an atom? With laser cooling, of course.īut how can lasers cause something to cool down? Aren’t lasers hot? The answer is: It depends. What we needed to do was give our detectors more time to get the best signal by slowing down the atoms. The clocks simply didn’t have much time to maximize their fluorescence and get a more accurate and stable signal. So fast, in fact, that it was hard to get a read on them. At those temperatures, cesium atoms move at around 130 meters per second, pretty fast. Why do we say “hot” clock? That’s because until the 1990s, the temperature of the cesium inside these clocks was a little more than room temperature. Atomic clocks have been continually improved, becoming more and more stable and accurate until the hot clock design reached its peak with the NIST-7, which would neither gain nor lose one second in 6 million years. While the definition has stayed the same, atomic clocks sure haven’t. The atomic second based on the cesium clock was defined in the International System of Units as the duration of 9,192,631,770 cycles of radiation in 1967. It had an uncertainty of one second in every 3,000 years, meaning that it kept time to within 1/3,000 of a second per year, pretty good compared to an average quartz watch, which might gain or lose a second every month. official time standard on January 1, 1960. NIST’s first cesium clock accurate enough to be used as a time standard, NBS-2, was built a few years later in 1958 and went into service as the U.S. The first clock that used cesium and was accurate enough to be used as a time standard was built by NIST’s counterpart in the U.K., the National Physical Laboratory, in 1955. Lyons’ clock, while revolutionary, wasn’t any better at keeping time than doing so by astronomical observations. When the emitter hits the right frequency, it causes a maximum number of atoms to change state, enabling scientists measure the duration of a certain number of cycles and define a second. Inside a chamber, a gas of atoms or molecules fly into a device that emits microwave radiation with a narrow range of frequencies. Lyons’ atomic clock, which he and his team debuted in 1949, was actually based on the ammonia molecule, but the principle is essentially the same. NIST Director Edward Condon (left) and clock inventor Harold Lyons contemplate the ammonia molecule upon which the clock was based. We would have to wait a century for NIST’s Harold Lyons to build the world’s first atomic clock. James Clerk Maxwell, the father of electromagnetic theory, was the first person to suggest that we might use the frequencies of atomic radiation as a kind of invariant natural pendulum, but he was talking about this in the mid-19th century, long before we could exert any kind of control over individual atoms. For the most precise measurement of the second, we look at the resonant frequencies of atoms. That could be the rising and setting of the sun, the swing of a pendulum from one side to another, or the back-and-forth vibration of a small piece of quartz. For us, time is the interval between two events. Here at NIST, we don’t worry about any of these philosophical notions of time. Your room gets messy and you have to expend energy to clean it, until it gets messy again. Entropy, loosely explained, is the tendency for things to become disorganized. Some say that what we experience as time is really our experience of the phenomenon of entropy, the second law of thermodynamics. Einstein is reported to have once said that time is what a clock measures. Kwame hooks up with a woman (Nilufer) but it ends badly when he reveals he is gay.
